GOLDEN FLEECE – Australia’s Favourite Oil Company.

So where did the name Golden Fleece and its history come from?

The originality of the name may have come from the Greek mythology where Phrixos was rescued and carried to safety by a ram. He sacrificed the ram who’s fleece then turned into gold. The golden fleece was hung by a tree limb and guarded by a dragon. The golden fleece was then sought after and won by Jason and the Argonauts. Thus the “golden fleece & hanging ram”?
1895 Harold Crofton Sleigh established a shipping and import & export company in Australia.

1913 It began primarily on the east coast and was distributed by H.C. Sleigh under the brand name of Golden Fleece. Their motor spirit was imported from California in four gallon tins and wooden crates.

1920 H.C. sleigh entered the motor spirit retailing field and erected the first solo brand outlet in South Melbourne. During the following decade Golden Fleece established 20 service stations in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide to trial and sell its products. From there it became one of the largest independent fuel & oil companies in Australia. In 1929 H.C. Sleigh established bulk ocean terminals in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Golden Fleece traded in Australia until 1981when Caltex bought the company
